ABOUT RUMFORD, MAINE:
We are located in the western foothills
approximately one hour from the New Hampshire
border on U.S. Route 2.
The Town of Rumford was first settled in 1779 by Jonathan Keyes.
Rumford was the 123rd town in the District of Maine, which at that time was still part
of Massachusetts. The original Charter was signed on February 21, 1800 making Rumford
an official town. Rumford currently has a population of approximately 6,500 and borders
one side of the Androscoggin River, while the town of Mexico, Maine borders the other.
The Rumford Police station was formed in 1904 and consisted of four officers
and a working chief. Today in its second century, the department is made up of a
Chief, Captain, Detective Sergeant, Four Supervisors those being two patrol
Sergeants and two patrol Corporals, four Patromen, a Utility Officer and a
civilian dispatcher. The current department house is on the riverside of the Town
Municipal buidling and contains the dispatch center (8 A.M. to 4 P.M. Monday through Friday)
and temporary holding facility (Jail) for Northern Oxford County.

Police Dispatcher/Administrative Officer
The Town of Rumford is accepting applications
for the position of a full time Police Dispatcher /
Administrative Officer with the Rumford Police
Department. The successful applicant will be
responsible for the handling of emergency and
routine communications. The person selected must
remain calm in emergency situations, be able to
communicate clearly over the phone and radio, and
have proficient typing skills.
Preference will be given to those candidates who
have been certified by the State of Maine in the
operation of N.L.E.T.S. and METRO systems.
Law Enforcement certification is also preferred.
Selected candidates will have to pass a full background check.

Town By-Law Chapter 19 Section 3:
No person shall allow, permit or suffer any vehicle under his control
or registered in his/her name to stand or be parked in any public street
or public right-of-way for a period of more than (2)-Two Hours between
11:01 pm and 6:00 am. Any vehicle found in violation is subject to a parking
ticket violation and if interfering with snow removal subject to their vehicle
being towed at their expense....

Sgt. Douglas Maifeld release his new 2011 Cop Card
featuring him as both a Rumford Police Officer and a Deputy
for the Oxford County Sheriff's Office. The cards were produced
for the children he meets throughout Oxford County.
September 2011
On September 27th, Chief Stacy Carter announced that
Donald Miller had been promoted to Corporal.
Congratulations Cpl. Miller.
June 2011
From June 18th to June 24th, Sgt. Douglas Maifeld was a Camp Leader
for a D.A.R.E. camp called Camp P.O.S.T.C.A.R.D. in Poland, Maine.
On June 9th, Officers from the Rumford, and Mexico
Police Departments along with the Maine State Police ran the
Law Enforcement Torch Run in support of Special Olympics Maine.
The torch run consists of numerous legs throughout Maine that run
the torch to the Summer Games at the University of Orono.
Our leg started in Rumford then went through Mexico and Dixfield on
Route 2 on its way to Waterville then onto Orono.

This years' runners who ran part or all of the six plus miles were
Sgt. Douglas Maifeld, Chief Stacy Carter, Capt. Daniel Garbarini,
Det. Sgt. James Bernard and Cpl. Lawrence Winson all of the
Rumford Police Department. Trooper Paul Casey - Maine State Police
Ptl. Daniel Carrier - Mexico Police and members of the Mexico PD Explorers.
On June 1st, Michael Belanger returned to work
following his 18 month deployment.

On May 23rd, the Rumford Police Department will began a
2-Week Safety Belt Enforcement and Education Program titled
"Buckle Up, No Exucses". This is a grant received from the NHTSA
to educate motorist to be safe by buckling up. National Public
Service Ads say, "Click it or Ticket!" It is a $70 fine for a
first offense $160 fine for a second offense and $310 fine
for a third and subsequent offenses.
Please buckle up because the life saved could be yours.
On May 11th, Sergeant Tracey Higley and members of the
Rumford Police Department did a Seat Belt / No Texting safety
check at Mountain Valley High School as part of the Keeping
Students Safe (KSS) program. The police department is hopeful that
students and parents will make a pledge of no texting and driving.

On May 7th, Sergeant Douglas Maifeld and Officer Eric Richard did a Child ID
with the use of the IRIS scan at the Rumford Eagle's Club for their
Kids Fest "Child Advocacy". The event was a success with 42 new enrollments.
This was the seventh event that the Rumford Police Department has used the IRIS Scan
and this was near record enrollments. The equipment is intended for use on children or the
elderly with the purpose of locating missing children and adults.
The IRIS Scan is a new procedure that takes an image of a persons eye and it gets
saved in to a national database. No two eyes are like just like your fingerprints.
The only difference is your eyes have twelve times more identifying marks then
your fingerprints and are easier to access than your fingerprints.

On April 26th, the Rumford Police Department began a
a new partnership with an online provider for crash reports.
Citizens and Insurance companies can now access their crash reports
usually within 72 hours by logging on to GetCrashReports.com.

On March 31st, Sgt. Douglas Maifeld held the
Rumford Police Department's 24th D.A.R.E.
program culmination celebrating our 23rd year educating
the youth about the dangers of drugs and violence in the
River Valley area. Retired University of Maine Professor
Walter Abbott of Rumford was our Guest Speaker.
76 5th grade students from Rumford and Meroby Elementary
School graduated. Congratulations to all.
