Maine Where America Begins

Rumford Police Department D.A.R.E. 1988-2008

Amber Alert:

MISSION STATEMENT:

Our mission is to serve the community with pride and excellence.
We strive to provide modern policing methods to partner with our residents
to achieve a safe and secure place to live, work and play.

ABOUT RUMFORD, MAINE:

We are located in the western foothills
approximately one hour from the New Hampshire border on U.S. Route 2.
The Town of Rumford was first settled in 1779 by Jonathan Keyes.
Rumford was the 123rd town in the District of Maine, which at that time was still part
of Massachusetts. The original Charter was signed on February 21, 1800 making Rumford
an official town. Rumford currently has a population of approximately 6,500 and borders
one side of the Androscoggin River, while the town of Mexico, Maine borders the other.

The Rumford Police station was formed in 1904 and consisted of four officers
and a working chief. Today in its second century, the department is made up of a
Chief, Captain, Detective Sergeant, Four Supervisors those being two patrol
Sergeants and two patrol Corporals, four Patromen, a Utility Officer and a
civilian dispatcher. The current department house is on the riverside of the Town
Municipal buidling and contains the dispatch center (8 A.M. to 4 P.M. Monday through Friday)
and temporary holding facility (Jail) for Northern Oxford County.

If any citizen has concerns about any matter
please feel free to contact the Chief of Police.

2-Week Safety Belt Enforcement and Education Program titled
"Buckle Up, No Exucses". This is a grant received from the NHTSA
to educate motorist to be safe by buckling up. National Public
Service Ads say, "Click it or Ticket!" It is a $70 fine for a
first offense $160 fine for a second offense and $310 fine
for a third and subsequent offenses.
Please buckle up because the life saved could be yours.

Saturation patrols, some roadblocks and continue through Labor Day

your life or the life of another by getting behind the wheel after
drinking intoxicating beverages.

April 2009

On April 11th, Corporal Douglas Maifeld and Officer Eric N. Richard
did a Child ID with the use of the new IRIS scan at the Rumford Eagle's Club
for their Kids Fest "Child Advocacy". The event was a complete success
with 43 new enrollments. This was the third event that the Rumford Police
Department has used the new IRIS Scan. The first was last fall with approximately
40 enrollments and recently we tried it at our local Head Start program
but wasn't as successful due to their young ages. The equipment is intended for use
on children age 5 and up with the purpose of locating missing children and adults.
Of note, we were successful on four children under 5 at the Rumford Eagle's Club.
The IRIS Scan is a new procedure that takes an image of a childs eye and it gets saved
in to a national database. No two eyes are like just like your fingerprints.
The only difference is your eyes have more identifying marks then your fingerprints
and are easier to access than your fingerprints. For more information about this
technology please visit the follwoing two links:
BI2 Technologies. and The Child Project.

On April 2nd, Corporal Douglas Maifeld and Sergeant Tracey Higley
held the Rumford Police Department's D.A.R.E. program culmination
celebrating our 21st year educating the youth about the dangers of drugs
and violence in the River Valley area. Congratulations to this years graduates.
We appreciate Doug Rafferty of WGME 13 for coming to Rumford and being our Guest Speaker.
